For the Environment

For the Environment

We rely on water to drink, to wash, to grow food. But water is so much more than that. The very health of our planet relies on it. Water is a carbon sink and landscapes enriched by water are able to absorb more carbon dioxide.

Climate-Resilient Water Systems

Water and climate change are intrinsically linked. Climate change is causing more extreme and frequent weather events like droughts and flooding. These disrupt the water cycle and threaten biodiversity and people’s access to water and sanitation. Flooding events can contaminate water sources with agricultural pollutants, saltwater, and faecal matter, as well as damaging WASH infrastructure like toilets, wells, and waterpoints. Droughts cause water scarcity by destroying vegetation, causing soil erosion and reducing the ability of groundwater sources to recharge.

Climate-resilient WASH is the central focus of how we plan and deliver our programmes. Our work has shifted towards systems-level changes, combining hydrogeological science, traditional knowledge, and community participation to design locally led approaches that are both scientifically sound and socially equitable. Our WSPs (water security plans) are created with communities and local authorities, designed to secure water today and for the future. With secure, clean water, communities thrive and nature is protected.

Nature-Based solutions

We work directly alongside communities, helping them to strengthen their water management systems. We don’t just install water pumps; we focus on the root cause of the issue. We rejuvenate springs and groundwater sources such as:

  • Groundwater recharge in Maharashtra, India
  • Spring Rejuvenation in Uttarakhand, India, and Kavrepalanchok, Nepal
  • Watershed management in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, India and in Kenya.

These nature-based solutions build resilient ecosystems that benefit communities and biodiversity simultaneously through climate regulation, water purification, ecosystem enhancement, and disaster risk reduction.

Water Dialogues

So often, in discussion around climate change and the environment, water is left out of the conversation. At Frank Water we give water a seat at the table.

Businesses and communities depend on the same watershed, but rarely work together to protect them. We have convened water dialogues, through which we give community members who are directly impacted by water scarcity and who are at the frontline of climate change, a voice. We coordinate discussions with policy makers, businesses owners, community members, and governments. This means local people work together to design sustainable, climate resilient water plans, backed by robust data, practical tools and solutions.

Festival Refills and the CIC

We partner with some of the UK’s most values-led events to reduce single-use plastic and raise awareness of water scarcity. We do this through providing a water refill service, managed by volunteers, serving filtered, refillable water. We ensure sustainability is at the heart of every event.

At festivals in 2025, we saved the equivalent of 48,558 plastic bottles from landfill, and approximately 4 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere. We’re proud to be a 1% for the Planet partner for 14 years – a global community of businesses committed to giving back. We’re also a member of Social Enterprise UK, joining others who put people and planet before profit.
