A huge thanks to the incredible Frank van der Kleij, who completed a three-week trek around Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world.
Covering over 160km, ascending more than 9,000m, and spending 20 nights camping in freezing conditions, Frank’s journey wasn’t just a physical feat; it was an act of solidarity with remote communities facing the very real threat of water insecurity. Frank recalls:
“This trip was a fantastic experience, a physical challenge, but also the chance to explore remote Buddhist villages and witness the rich cultural and geographic diversity of Nepal.” Frank.
Starting in the lush, terraced foothills of the Himalayas at 800m, Frank trekked through sub-tropical forests and high-altitude deserts, eventually crossing the Larkya La Pass at nearly 5,200m. Along the way, he witnessed the breathtaking beauty and fragility of this vital region, home to the world’s largest reserve of freshwater outside Antarctica and the Arctic.
This Himalayan water supply supports over one billion people and more than 10,000 species of plants and animals. But as climate change accelerates, the springs, streams and rivers that sustain life here are drying up, threatening biodiversity, livelihoods, and entire ways of life.
“Having worked on water supply projects, I know just how life-changing access to clean, reliable water can be. Supporting Frank Water’s work to build climate-resilient water systems in Nepal was an obvious choice.” Frank.
Frank’s trek wasn’t just about testing his limits, it was about giving back. By fundraising for Frank Water, he’s helping protect Himalayan springs through community-led water management, supporting sustainable solutions that ensure long-term access to safe, clean water.
Without these vital water sources, not only would communities struggle, the very landscapes that draw adventurers from around the world would be under threat.
Taking on a challenge like this is a powerful way to support Frank Water’s work and experience something unforgettable. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or simply someone passionate about water and climate justice, you can make a difference.
