Rebecca Hawkins Sculpture Collaboration

Renowned sculptor, Rebecca Hawkins has created nine beautiful bronze sculptures as part of a collection titled, Journeys with Water, Celebrating the Freedom Water Brings.

Rebecca has dedicated the past two decades to celebrating the strength of women and girls in adverse circumstances, including those who carry water for their communities. Drawing inspiration from her travels in Nepal and India, particularly with Frank Water, she has created a compelling collection of sculptures that takes us on a journey from life without easy access to water, to the transformative impacts that sustainable access to safe water can bring.

Rebecca said: “When I visited India with Frank Water 18 months ago, I was struck by how excited the women were about Frank Water’s work. Education, safe water, and sanitation have improved the health of the community, and women are becoming leaders, influencing the government to implement local change. Girls and women no longer walk for miles for water, giving them time for education and to earn much-needed income.

These pieces were inspired by the amazing women I met in rural India, such as 22-year-old village chief Reena from Madhya Pradesh, who embodied the poise, elegance, and understated ferocity characteristic of women in these communities. With their tenacity and humour, I am inspired by these women every day.”

Frank Water and Rebecca Hawkins have collaborated to raise awareness and funds – 50% of the profits from the ‘Journeys with Water’ collection will directly support Frank Water’s charitable work.

These sculptures are currently on display in Birmingham city in Arup’s office until next Tuesday:

Dates and Time:  Wed 17 – Fri 20 Sep & Mon 23 – Tues 24 Sep 2024, 08:00-18:00 each day

Weight of the World

‘Weight of the World’ depicts a strong woman, striding out purposefully, carrying an enormous pot on her head. Like all of us, these communities are reliant on water. However, water isn’t just available from a near-to-reach tap.

Winds of Change

‘Winds of Change’ is inspired by the strength and elegance of women, who are historically and culturally marginalised within society, but are instrumental in holding it up. This piece embodies the idea that change is on the horizon, with Frank Water’s work accelerating that change.

39 x 21 x 35cm

£5,200 +VAT

Flow

‘Flow’ is inspired by all things water, and women’s pivotal co-existence with water within the communities where Frank Water works. The access and availability of water disproportionately affects the lives of women, as the burden of collecting and using water often falls to them.

23 x 35 x 12cm

£3,250 +VAT

Tower of Strength

‘Tower of Strength’ is inspired by the immense, seemingly super-human strength of the women and girls who carry stacks of pots daily, sometimes for hours at a time, to support their families and communities.

31 x 20 x 9cm

£4,620 +VAT

The Crooked Spine

‘The Crooked Spine’ reflects the toil of water collection in communities not yet benefiting from Frank Water’s work. Before their involvement, villagers faced serious health issues due to increasing levels of fluoride in their water sources, affecting villagers’ bone density, teeth, and spines. Thanks to Frank Water’s work, the water quality has significantly improved and villagers either have centrally located water taps, or safe water taps in their homes.

67 x 35 x 60cm

£12,950 +VAT

Tap Dance

‘Tap Dance’ celebrates the freedom and release that easy access to safe water provides to women and girls in rural India and Nepal. When Rebecca visited India with Frank Water, the older women she spoke to were so relieved and delighted that the younger generations would not suffer the physical hardship that they endured, carrying water for hours each day.

40 x 17 x 17cm

£4,299 +VAT

Reflections on Water

‘Reflections on Water’ speaks of the difference in life for a village woman after Frank Water’s life-changing work. She is walking, with her sari flowing free and without a pot on her head, looking down to a reflected past version of herself carrying two water pots.

26 x 12.5 x 50cm

£7,200 +VAT

The Educational Edge

‘The Educational Edge’ celebrates the impact of Frank Water’s education work, as well as the resilience and strength of the rural women Rebecca met in India and Nepal. She was especially moved by Reena, a 22-year-old village chief from Madhya Pradesh, who embodied the poise, elegance, and quiet determination characteristic of women in these communities. Rebecca finds daily inspiration in these women’s tenacity, humour and motivation.

42.5 x 32cm

£3,400 +VAT

A Better View

‘A Better View’ speaks to the freedom that Frank Water’s work provides. Women and girls are saved from walking with heavy water pots on their heads in order to collect water to drink, wash, and cook. Girls can now go to school, and women have the time to earn extra income for their families, who are surviving on very little.
