Hidden water

Hidden water

Water is used to make all of the products we use, food we eat and services we need. There is hidden water in farming, mining, manufacturing and transport. It can be called virtual water, embodied water or indirect water and although it’s invisible, a huge amount of water is used at every stage of every production process.

Often, the items we buy are grown or made in water scarce regions of the world. Through global trading, virtual water travels to support consumption of products around the world.
