This year, we are launching our next round of work in Kenya, building on our pilot project in 2022 with renowned public health and WASH NGO Amref.
In Kenya, water insecurity has a direct and damaging effect on communities, especially on women and children. In Kenya, 1 in 5 people lack access to safe drinking water, and this is being exacerbated by the increasing effects of climate change. Fragile water systems are disrupted by frequent droughts, floods, and erratic rainfall.
This is where we will come in. We focus on long-term, climate resilient water solutions by working with local people, water and health practitioners and governments to develop and implement water security plans that strengthen systems so clean water continues to flow into the future. Following our successful work with medical NGO, Amref in Kajiado County in 2023, where we created water security plans that covered 11,000 people, in 2026 we are going to further our work supporting resilient WASH systems in Kenya and potentially other countries in the east Africa region.
Online in April and in person in May, we will be training water management practitioners, NGOs like Amref, civil society networks like KEWASNET and government officials from counties of Kenya, to create climate-proof water security plans. These will be rooted in local knowledge, nature-based solutions, scientific data, and adaptive management, and branch from our WASH Basins Toolkit developed in collaboration with our long-term partner Arup. By working alongside local people and tackling climate change through resilient water, we will ensure that these solutions withstand the test of time.
