FRANK funds world wide clean water projects. FRANK has so far funded the installation of 4  projects in Andhra Pradesh, India. An additional 4 more projects in this area are currently under development- benefitting 48 000 people to date.

Each project costs £6,700 and provides clean, safe drinking water for up to 6,000 people in the surrounding communities.  FRANK Water staff make annual, self funded visits to the villages and meet with our partners to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the projects.  Please visit our FRANK gallery page to see photos of the projects.

5-Filter Technology. 

It’s not just access to water that makes a difference to people’s lives.  It has to be clean and filtered. Clean, safe drinking water is essential if the villagers and their families are to be healthy.  See our water facts page for more details.  The World Health Organisation recommends the use of a MINIMUM of 2 barriers between the original water source and drinking water.

FRANK Water Projects use 5 filters in the cleaning process. 

The award winning technology invented specifically for use in developing countries by Ashok Gadgil of Water Health International.  The technology includes a sand filter, carbon filter, 5 and 1 micron filters and a compact, low maintenance UV filter which produces water that is 99.9999% clean, as good as clean water can get.

Sustainable, Community Run Projects.

FRANK works closely with Naandi (www.naandi.org), a local Indian NGO, to identify communities that require clean water facilities.  Naandi commits to work in every village that has a facility on all related water issues, including agricultural practices, irrigation, sanitation etc.

Once a project is set up, it is owned, run and maintained by the local community, with WHI and Naandi on hand providing support.  Local operators (from that specific village) are trained to operate and maintain the facility. 

Villagers pay 1 rupee for every 15 litres of safe drinking water.  This price is set by Naandi and is affordable (est. 50p per year per person for drinking water).The 1 Rupee is split into thirds; one third goes towards the operators salaries, the second third towards filters and parts, whilst the last third is reinvested into the community.

FRANK currently works with selected project partners:

	WaterHealth International (WHI) handles construction, system installation and training local operators. Ashok Gadgil of WHI invented a new award-winning ultraviolet technology. It is a compact, low maintenance device that uses ultra violet light to disinfect drinking water efficiently and economically. http://www.waterhealth.com/
	Naandi, a local Indian NGO, runs education, outreach and community capacity building projects. WHI is working with Naandi to identify communities that will benefit from the new technology via our funding. http://www.naandi.org/

FRANK water pilot projects with Water Health International are due for completion in Ghana, Africa in March 2008.
