THE GREEN OPTION
FRANK as a company aims to tread lightly. We are first and foremost a tap water company funding and providing safe, clean tap water in developing nations - that is what we do.
In the UK we promote refillable bottles and filter water coolers with low carbon footprints. The only real green option with bottled water is to not buy
bottled water (or any other drink contained in plastic or transported
long distances) but to refill reusable containers with tap water.
Friends of the Earth claim bottled water is environmental madness.
At FRANK Water we couldn't agree more. Bottled water consumption is a
part, albeit a small part, of the problem of Climate Poverty and therefore exacerbates
access to clean drinking water in developing nations.
LIVING WITH PARADOXES
Selling bottled spring water is a paradox that FRANK water has to live with until the £50 billion
worldwide bottled water market disappears and access to clean, safe
drinking water is improved for the one billion people without access - including the 2 million people (6000 children every day) who die every year from drinking contaminated water..
There are other paradoxes too - like the $3 Trillion 2009 financial bailout, the $760Bn spent annually by the military or the $12Bn spent by the US and EU on perfumes - which seems alot, given that only an estimated $9Bn is required to provide water and sanitation for all.
All paradoxes aside we
are determined to be as environmentally sound as it is possible for a water company to be. We firmly believe our responsibility for
over-consumption, waste and carbon emissions does not end at the factory gate or office
door.
FRANK IS NOT FATTENING
In the Northern hemisphere there is a well documented and growing obesity problem - particularly amongst children- with an estimated 15% of UK children under 15 being diagnosed overweight or obese in 2004.(BUPA)
Spring water is zero calorie compared with Smoothies and Colas which can have up to 8 spoons of sugar per serving. As part of a healthy living programme choose FRANK - it's not fattening.
BRING BACK PUBLIC DRINKING FOUNTAINS
Spring water is a healthy substitute for sugared drinks but a
more environmental subsitute is tap water. Unfortunately, since the
demise of public drinking fountains, sometimes bottled water is the
least bad or only option (unless you always remember to refill from
home).
If you want to join our <Bring Back Public Drinking Fountains> campaign please contact us here.
THE 3 R's
FRANK water promotes the 3-R's, and refreshingly, is the only bottled water company that actively encourages REDUCING, not just reusing and recycling.
FRANK ABOUT CARBON
Does FRANK carbon offset every single bubble in
its sparkling water? No of course it doesn't. This is because
FRANK does not believe that a bottled water company can be carbon
neutral. Like a carbon neutral airline, the real solution is not to
offset but to reduce consumption. If you are concerned about the
carbon footprint of bottled water drink tap water or refill instead.
NO FRANK IN FRANCE
As soon as things move they use up carbon. Using a local UK supply of water minimizes
the carbon emissions caused by transportation over long distances. Frank
will not supply Devonshire water to Fiji, Norway or Iceland. Or Belgium. There is no FRANK in FRANCE. Water from the French Alps travels 666 miles to reach London whereas water from the Highlands of Scotland travels 666 kms. Either way it makes sense to drink a locally sourced spring water.
FRANK NOT FRANKENSTEIN
FRANK Water is available in glass bottles and PET plastic bottles. The plastic bottles are 100% recyclable and can be turned into tables, traffic cones, and even fleeces.
FRANK believes biodegradable packaging is rubbish. Literally. FRANK
water believes that swapping PET plastic packaging for biodegradable plastic
just swaps problems. We do not believe that packaging derived from
US GM corn starch (frankenstein foods) which use oil-based pesticides and
fertilisers, is a viable, sutstainable solution.
FRANK water does
not wish to encourage GM farming. We continue our research and are
aiming to be the first Soil Association approved bio-packaging company in the
UK. If you know of someone who can help us please contact hello@frankwater.com
In addition to sourcing problems, industrial
composting of PLA locally is highly problematic. And if not
composted, PLA contaminates plastic recycling or enters landfill and
releases methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times worse than CO2.
RECYCLING
Only 20% of UK plastics are recycled. Our recyclable PET bottles can be
recycled into carpets, pens, clothes, food containers and back into
bottles. It takes just 25 two-litre bottles to make one adult size
fleece jacket or 2000 bottles to make a bench. Recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W light bulb for six hours...
